Two questions guide this work: the contradictions of information society and the formation of so called information professional. This denomination adopted by librarians throghout last decades of the past century and their works have been marked by the duality, sometimes with a progressive vision, sometimes with a conservative vision. We lead our reflection in two moments that complete themselves. First, we focus the role that librarian has assumed in the Brazilian society, then we refer to on the way as we think its social and politic role in that society.
