Ο θεσμός του Διευθυντή Βιβλιοθήκης στο Πανεπιστημίου Κύπρου : Εισαγωγή σε μια Eλληνική (όχι εικονική) πραγματικότητα.

Descripción
  • Up to date the University of Cyprus consists the youngest University in the Greek-speaking world. Since its foundation, it operates mainly based on European and North American standards and methods. From the point of view of the structure of its services and the followed education and learning model, it is unique in the Greek academic reality. The institutionalised position of the Library Director reflects this uniqueness. The Library Director refers directly to the Rector, is an ex officio member of the University Senate; his/her salary is comparable with those of the Senior Professors in the University; the institutional frame of the position, his/her job description and the capabilities for management are governed by the state Law of the Cyprus Republic. Presenting the institutional frame of the position of the Library Director in the University of Cyprus, in this paper, a different situation from the one dominating in the Hellenic Academic Libraries is attempted to be shown. Furthermore a direct comparison with the existing situation in Greece is expected to be invoked. In parallel, issues are developed concerning the role that academic libraries are challenged to play in the visible future. For better understanding the situation, a short description of the “history” of the University of Cyprus is presented, followed by the organisation chart of the administrative services, the organisational structure of the Library within the frame of the University. The institutional frame and the administrative and academic bodies that the Library Director participates, the budget and the revenues he manages, the procedures followed and the possibilities offered for the development of the Library. Statistics for estimating the size and operation of the library are also presented. The followed learning model, the library services that have been developed in order to serve this model, as well as the axes that the Library tries to develop for its evolution into a "Learning Resources Centre" are also discussed.
