- The user-friendly integration of interdisciplinary bibliographic collections does require not only the linking of single information services on a technical tier, it rather demands a model for semantic integration. We propose the concept of semantic heterogeneity treatment as a way to integrate various collections by their inherent semantic structures, namely their indexing languages, thesauri and other knowledge organization systems. Cross-concordances (crosswalks or mappings) between two controlled vocabularies are one way to integrate different databases by mapping their descriptors. The intellectual mapping of controlled vocabularies is portrayed by the example of the German information service infoconnex (http://www.infoconnex.de) with achieves a semantic integration of different bibliographic databases in the fields of social sciences, education and psychology. The automatic transformation service bases on semantic relations and enables users to search simultaneously in several databases without formulating the search query repeatedly and in a database specific way. We show multiple examples where cross-concordances are a well working mechanism of interdisciplinary search.
