- The paper presents theoretic assumptions and practical applications of library information services. It depicts transformations of information sources and forms of making them available as well as changes of users’ demands for specific types of information. New technologies cause changes in former organisation of presenting scientific information. More and more often science information is being decentralized, it is provided not only in currently acting Science Reference Divisions, Science Information Departments and sections. Information services are widely accessible online, so the function of a librarian transforms into an information manager, so changes the function of a library. The paper attempts to show the current and future offer of a library, patrons’ expectations and what they actually get. It also contains predictions for science information development in academic libraries. Information sources and tools as well as library – user communication methods are presented. The possibility of providing information by electronic online means is accentuated.
