- The location of the library in a city or in a building plays an important role in the success
of an academic or a public library. Site selection for academic library buildings is more
often than not determined by the first campus master plan, with a little possibility of
change. Either in the first selection, or in the next, planner must have in mind some general
criteria that can help him in his final choices and the proofs for its Tightness. The
organization, which commits the meditation, must give him an episcopic map of the
region (mostly for academic libraries), topographic map and ground audits. If the
meditation is for a building which will be renovated or will be expanded, the "customer"
must commit him all the mechanical, architectural, electrological, static, against earthquake
and functional plans, and every other needed information. In academic libraries, and in
others too, if the choice of the location of the library has been many years ago, either by campus master plan or by history, planner must be thoroughly familiar with this plan and determine whether or not the site selected is appropriate according to the new needs and the first criteria, and if they are exist even now. Some criteria that planner, either librarian or architecture, can be based on, are:
size of the available site for the erection of the library building, the rules and the laws for public buildings
geological basis of the site must be considered. Obtaining information on adjacent buildings is some important. These considerations will take part later too, but it would be nice to keep in mind before it will be too late.
relationship to adjacent campus facilities, as situated in proximity to classroom buildings or laboratories (for school and academic libraries), or the location according to the city activities (for public libraries)
vehicular and pedestrian access. In academic libraries, students are likely to be less concerned about the time required coming in library
car parking for adults. Providence for one place for parking for every three places in reading room are quite enough.
noise, even in a modern library, is an important factor.
Other criteria that must be considered is immediate surroundings and its appearance,
availability and adequacy of main services, the endurance of the building, the possibility
of floor loading, when the building already exists, and cost. Of course, the most important
criterion is the available land where the library can be built. Mostly needed is the
excellent cooperation between technicians (architectures, mechanics) and the direction
of the library and librarians as well. Librarians must get all these general knowledge for
facing this cooperation.
