- The university library has become a tranforming space. Maintaining the social role to which they are called supossed and presuposess new challenges. This paper tried from a documentary aproach and on the basis of metrics tools to outline in a general haw the university library are observed from the paradigm of knowledge and their management in this century. Some of their essential components are described. The authors reflect on the change of the university libraries have to face on becoming centers of resources of learning ahd reserach. Finally, it is analyzed the tematic behavior on the research on the topic from 2002 to 2007 absed on an exploration carried out in the web of science. There is coherence in this field of studies and there are many aspects on which the reserach in the area of academic and university library should be focussed.
