- This paper reviews the metadata schemas concept, typology and use for information discovery, preservation and access in the current digital records and archives landscape, as well as the recordkeeping tasks around them. It analyses the changes and challenges in document description, from the traditional standards like ISAD (G) to the most new metadata standards founded on XML metalanguage and in a semantic model of metadata schemas. It specially deals with the reflection about the challenges on digital records management and retrieval in the face of imminent electronic Administration, Government online and all issues related to electronic transactions and public bureaucracy in the nowadays’ Information Society.
