- This article explores the concept of Digital asset management (DAM) and its significance for creating multimedia archives, as well as for exploiting and distributing the intellectual capital accumulated over years of activity by numerous organisations —in the form of images, graphs, illustrations, audio and video files, etc.—. The main characteristics and requirements of DAM solutions are explained and a description is provided of four programs which are among the most highly evaluated and widely adopted internationally. The descriptions are based largely on a review of the documentation obtained from the creators of these applications: Cumulus, Teams, MediaBin, and Documentum. The article ends by listing —with a brief commentary— other companies working with DAM technology as well as other software packages.
