- Scientific information access has been a great challenge to
undeveloped countries as Brazil. With the scientific journal crisis
motivated by the high prices on the scholarly journals
subscriptions, that access became very limited. Even that crisis
had started in the middle 80’s, until today there is not a
definitive solution. With the information and communication
technologies, rises, the Open Archives Initiative, which defines
a model of interoperability for libraries and digital repositories,
making possible new alternatives for scientific communication.
At the same time, the open access to scientific information
movement got stronger around the world, confronting the big
editors and publishers, proposing actions to make possible the consolidation that initiative. Those are the bases proposed by the new model to intensified and consolidate the register and dissemination of the Brazilian scientific information content, as well as its access. With the experiences brought with the development of Brazilian Digital Library of Theses and dissertations (BDTD), the Brazilian Institute for Information on Science and Technology has today the technical ability to implement and consolidate that project.
