• The last years of the 20th century presented new challenges and trends in the practice of medicine. The so-called modern medicine grows stronger with a new model of clinical practice: evidence - based medicine. In the article the origin, philosophy, evolution, and guidelines of this new approach are established and an overview on its development perspectives in the current society is provided. The challenges faced by the information professionals as managers of information, learning, and knowledge in the different organizations of the medical community are dealt with.
